About the locality: Bulgarians settled in the village in 1806–1814 and 1828–1834 (Roman, L. 1984: 140). The 1838 registry of the population records the presence of 60 “Serbian” households. Bulgarians from Stoeneşti actively participated in the 1848 revolution (Velichi, C. N. 1971: 258). During G. Weigand’s visit in 1898 two thirds of the population was Bulgarian (Weigand, G. 1900: 117). Weigand later included the village in his atlas as a locality with Bulgaria population (Weigand, G. 1909: Map 67). According to data from different sources, the Bulgarian population stems from localities around Bjala Slatina, from Sirakovo, Bjala-Slatina Region; Krušovene, Staverci and Hŭrlec, Orjahovo Region; and Dolni Dŭbnik, Mahalata and Slavovica, Pleven Region see Романски, С. 1935: 84; Младенов, М. С. 1993: 44. Approximately 300 families were living there at the time of fieldwork in 1969. Младенов, М. 1994 contains the dialect texts from Stoeneşti that present traditional wedding customs.
