About the locality:
The village is situated on the road from Bucharest to Târgovişte. Bulgarians settled there around 1830. According to different sources 128 or 88 Bulgarian families were living there in 1838 (Trifonescu, G. 1973: 44; Velichi, C. N. 1965: 112). G. Weigand included the village in his atlas as a locality with Bulgarian population (Weigand, G. 1909: Map 67). In 1930 the Bulgarian population was 2299, working mainly in gardening. Large groups have moved to the nearby city of Târgovişte (ca 200 households at the beginning of the XX century) and to the village Comişan (twenty families or so). During fieldwork in 1968 estimated 1000 Bulgarian families were residing in the village. Bulgarian language was well preserved. A study of the dialect is published in Стойков, С. 1970. Васева, В. 2001 deals with funeral rites and Младенов, М. 1994 contains the dialect texts from Băleni-Sârbi that present traditional wedding customs.
