About the locality:
This large village was mentioned for the first time in 1793 (Roman, L. 1984: 139). The 1838 registry of the population notes the presence of 105 “Serbian” families in its neighbourhood Ipoteşti (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 113). At the end of the nineteenth century the number of inhabitants was 2081. Almost all of them were Bulgarian with a poor command of the Romanian language. They were known for their traditional values, patriarchal outlook and religiosity. Commerce was a popular occupation among them (Alessandrescu, C., I. G. Sfinţescu 1895: 63–64). Residents of Coteana actively participated in the peasant unrest at railroad station Slatina in June 1899 (Weigand, G. 1900: 117–118; Ionaşcu, I. 1955). When Stojan Romanski visited them in 1908, older people still remembered that their ancestors had come to Coteana from specific villages in the regions of Orjaxovo, Montana and Lom in Bulgaria. At the time this interview was recorded, the village had approximately 4000 inhabitants, three quarters of whom were Bulgarian. Texts describing local wedding customs recorded in Coteana have been published in Младенов, М. 1994.
