About the locality:
The village is situated approximately 10 km south of Alexandria. It is mentioned in connection with Bulgarian settlers in 1806–1814 and 1828–1834 (Roman, L. 1984: 142). Apparently, most Bulgarian settlers arrived in 1828. Documents preserved in the Romanian State Archive state that two families (18 persons) arrived from Orehovica, Pleven Region in 1831 and additional six families in 1834. The 1838 registry of the population records the presence of 56 “Serbian” households (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 114). Sources from the end of the 19th century give 850 as the total number of residents and note that they were mostly Bulgarians who were clinging to their language and traditions (Georgescu, P. 1897: 337). Lahovari, G. I., C. I. Bratianu, G. Tocilescu 1898-1902 2: 154). G. Weigand who visited the village in 1898 provided similar statistics and later included it in his atlas (Weigand, G. 1900: 118; Weigand, G. 1909: Map 67). In 1908 S. Romanski encountered more than 180 Bulgarian families in Calomfireşti, originating according to local opinion from the area around the Iskŭr River. Fieldwork in 1972 found more than 300 families in the village and a large number of intermarriages. Младенов, М. 1994 contains the dialect texts from Calomfireşti that present traditional wedding customs. See Vlădescu, M., C. Vulpe 1999: 104–121 regarding the bioanthropological features of the population.
