About the locality:
Bulgarian settlers came to the village in two waves: in 1806–1814 and 1828–1834 (Roman, L. 1984: 138). The 1838 registry of the population documents the existence of 117 “Serbian” families (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 113). When Weigand visited the village in 1899, he found there over 1000 Bulgarians. He also reported that many residents had moved to the Bucharest neighbourhood Iancu and included it in his atlas as a locality with Bulgarian population (Weigand, G. 1900: 119; Weigand, G. 1909: Map 67). Stojan Romanski established in his 1906 visit that Valea Dragului residents were the descendants of Bulgarian settlers from the village of Pisanec, Ruse Region. Regarding the settlement, see Димчев, К. 1969: 186–190; Жечев, Н. 1983: 56; Младенов, М., Б. Нягулов, Н. Жечев 1994: 229. Regarding the impressions of a staff member of the Bulgarian embassy who visited the village in 1942, see Младенов, М., Б. Нягулов, Н. Жечев 1994: 338. Zlatca Iuffu and Kiril Dimčev have extensively studied the Valea Dragului dialect and folklore (Юфу, З. 1974; Юфу, З. 1991; Юфу, З. 1994; Iuffu, Zl. 1973; Димчев, К. 1968; Димчев, К. 1969; Димчев, К. 1969; Димчев, К. 1974; see also Младенов, М. С. 1971, a review of Димчев, К. 1969, Kahl, T. 2013). On funeral rites cf. Васева, В. 2001 and on carolling Грънчарова, Е. 2008.
